Shoreline Aggregate Solutions – What is Torpedo Sand?

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Sand is a naturally occurring material that most of us don’t need to spend much time thinking about until we head to the beach for a fun day in the sun, take the kids out in the sandbox, or need it for a home or commercial construction project.

After all, sand is just sand, right?

It feels great between our toes, keeps the kids wondrously occupied for hours and is a necessary ingredient for many construction projects.  Applications from road construction to volleyball courts use the fine aggregate sand.

Sand is widely used in construction, often providing strength, bulk, and stability to materials like concrete, mortar, asphalt, and cement. On golf courses, sand can greatly impact the playability of course and its appearance. It is easy to assume all sand is the same. But that isn’t the case. Depending on your project, the right type of sand aggregate is a big factor in the final outcome. Sand varieties can vary in color, texture and overall use. Whatever the project, Shoreline has the quality sand you need.

Varieties of Sand

Sand comes in several different varieties that differ in size, coarseness, and purpose. Each type of sand is washed and prepared to meet industry standards for its function.

At Shoreline we have top quality sand of every variety:

Torpedo Sand and Mason Sand

Two commonly used sands are Torpedo Sand and Mason Sand. Both are common in the construction industry.

First, let’s look at Torpedo sand. It is a natural sand commonly used as a substrate additive to create asphalt and concrete, but it can also be used for multiple landscaping applications too. Since it’s simple and coarse, and drains well, it is a great product for backfill and subbase. It’s an excellent choice for leveling surfaces. You can also mix torpedo sand with black dirt to make it easier to work with.

Shoreline’s Torpedo Sand is a high-quality coarse sand that provides the superior performance expected by our many asphalt and construction partners. It is washed, screened and meets industry standards. Torpedo sands other uses can be for paver leveling, sandboxes, stone walls and other landscaping projects.

Second, we will look at Mason sand. Also called masonry sand or mortar sand, it is a fine sand often used in construction. This sand features grains of uniform size, giving it a smooth look and feel.

As you would expect, masonry work commonly uses Mason Sand — thus the reason for its name. A wide range of projects benefit from the extremely versatile mason sand. It is suitable for volleyball courts, infill purposes, sandboxes and beneath swimming pools. Similarly, horse arena applications also used mason sand in a blend with other sand types.

Shoreline’s Mason Sand is fine, clean washed sand with no rocks. This very fine beach type sand is a flexible choice – and often the top choice for projects that don’t call for a specific kind of sand. It offers a balance of fineness and affordability for many home and commercial projects.
