Root Zone Construction Mix
A mixture of sand and other materials is the preferred mixture for the root zone layer on the golf course. Sand works well with bentgrass greens because it resists compaction and has a high air infiltration rate. Mixing the sand with peat increases retention of water and nutrients. Since peat is organic and will eventually break down, other inorganic materials are sometimes added to the mix to increase water and nutrient retention.
USGA Standards
The USGA (United States Golf Association) recommends standards that will create the ideal golf course. According to their recommendations, the proper construction mix for the root zone layer should contain at least 60% sand content and 5% to 20% clay content. If peat is used, it should have at least 85% organic matter.
